Become our new Chair
Welcome to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Thank you for your interest in leading our Council.
About the HCPC
The HCPC exists for a single, fundamental purpose: to protect the public. We regulate more than 360,000 professionals across 15 health and care professions, operating at the intersection of patient safety, professional standards and public confidence. We are now entering a new strategic period, having just published our new strategy to 2031, Protecting the public through the people who care, which seeks to build on our successes of the last five years from a position of greater confidence and stability.
About the Chair
Our Chair plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of one of the UK’s largest and most complex health and care regulators as we manage our response to regulatory reform, system pressures and evolving public expectations. Our current Chair, Christine Elliott, is due to step down after two successful terms and we are seeking to appoint a new Chair who is motivated by public service, inspired by regulatory leadership, and who is ready to guide the organisation through its next phase, at a time of significant opportunity and challenge across the health and care system. We are committed to delivering a more agile and proactive model of regulation so we can ensure the HCPC remains a modern, responsive and effective regulator for the future.
The role
The Chair’s role is central to ensuring that we discharge our statutory responsibilities effectively, transparently and proportionately, while continuing to earn the confidence of registrants, service users, the wider public, Parliament and the Professional Standards Authority.
This role is highly visible, requiring gravitas, judgement and the ability to balance challenge and support at Board level. It presents the opportunity to provide inclusive, authoritative leadership to the Council; set the tone for constructive challenge, good governance and ethical decision‐making; support and appraise the Chief Executive; and ensure a strong, effective partnership between the Council and executive.
You will also lead a Council that values diversity of thought, learning and reflection, and is steadfastly focused on meeting its responsibilities for performance, risk, culture and public accountability.
This is a rare opportunity to chair an organisation with national reach, deep societal impact and a clear statutory mission. We are looking for a Chair who is thoughtful, resilient and values‐led, someone who will steward what has been achieved, while helping us go further and meet the opportunities and challenges ahead.
Thank you for your interest in becoming the next Chair of the HCPC. We hope the information here provides a sense of the significance of the role and the difference the right Chair can make. We look forward to learning more about you and your interest in leading us into our next chapter.
